Frequently asked questions
What is actually in a beauty supplement?
Usually some combination of collagen peptides, biotin, zinc, selenium, silica, vitamin C and occasionally omega-3 or plant extracts. The nutrients doing the regulated work are the vitamins and minerals โ those are the ingredients with authorised EU claims. Collagen, silica and botanical extracts carry no authorised claim, which is why our product pages describe what is in them and how much, rather than promising an outcome. See the Hair, Skin & Nails collection for the full list of authorised nutrient claims.
Supplement or topical skincare โ which does more?
They work on different problems, so it is not really a contest. Topical products act on the skin surface and the outer layers: hydration, texture, pigmentation, sun protection. Supplements address nutritional intake, which matters when something is genuinely lacking and matters much less when it is not. If your skin concern is dryness, texture or sun damage, the money is better spent topically.
What does omega-3 have to do with skin?
EPA and DHA are structural fatty acids and are commonly included in beauty formulas on that basis. Under EU-authorised claims, DHA and EPA contribute to normal heart function and DHA to normal brain function and vision โ there is no authorised skin claim, and we will not imply one. If you rarely eat oily fish, omega-3 is a reasonable general addition to your diet regardless of what it is marketed for.
Can a supplement protect my skin from the sun?
No. Some products in this category contain beta-carotene, lycopene or polypodium extracts and are marketed around sun preparation, but nothing taken orally replaces sunscreen, shade or clothing. Treat any product suggesting otherwise with suspicion, and read our sunscreen guidance on how much to apply and how often.
How do I avoid doubling up with a multivitamin?
Beauty formulas tend to be concentrated in exactly the nutrients multivitamins also contain โ biotin, zinc and selenium especially. Zinc and selenium have relatively narrow safe ranges, so stacking two products can push past recommended amounts without you noticing. Add up the totals across everything you take, including fortified foods.
How long should I give it before deciding?
Three months minimum, six to be fair. Hair grows roughly a centimetre a month and nails more slowly, so any change shows in new growth rather than what is already there. Judging a beauty supplement after four weeks tells you about hydration, not structure.
