Frequently asked questions

How often should I wash my hair?

There is no universal answer — it depends on scalp oil production, hair texture and what you put on it. Fine or oily hair often needs daily or alternate-day washing; coarse, curly or dry hair usually less. The idea that hair "gets used to" less washing and self-regulates is not supported; sebum production is largely hormonal.

What actually causes dandruff?

Most commonly Malassezia, a yeast that lives on everyone's scalp but which some people react to, producing flaking and itch. That is why anti-dandruff shampoos use antifungal actives such as selenium disulfide or piroctone olamine rather than just moisturising. Dry scalp and dandruff are different problems with different solutions — moisturiser will not fix the fungal kind.

Do hair supplements work for shedding?

It depends entirely on the cause. Shedding driven by iron deficiency, thyroid dysfunction, a recent illness, rapid weight loss or a stressful event three months earlier will not respond to biotin. Nutrients help when a deficiency exists. Sudden or patchy hair loss is worth investigating clinically before spending on supplements.

Where does conditioner go — roots or ends?

Mid-lengths and ends, unless the product says otherwise. Conditioner on the scalp weighs down fine hair and can contribute to buildup. Scalp treatments and tonics are the products designed to go at the roots.

How do I use a hair oil without greasy results?

Start with far less than feels right — one or two drops for fine hair — warm it between your palms, and apply to ends first, working upward only if needed. Applying to damp rather than dry hair distributes it more evenly. Pre-wash oiling is another option if leave-in oil is always too much.
