Frequently asked questions
Is "superfood" a regulated term?
No. It is a marketing category, not a legal or nutritional classification, and EU rules prohibit using it to imply health benefits that are not authorised. In practice it covers nutrient-dense whole foods and concentrates โ spirulina, chlorella, manuka honey, cacao, nut butters, mushroom extracts. Judge each by its actual nutrition panel rather than the label on the front.
What does the MGO number on manuka honey mean?
MGO measures methylglyoxal content in mg/kg โ the compound manuka is graded on. MGO 250 and MGO 400 are grades, not medical ratings, and a higher number means a higher concentration and a higher price, nothing more. UMF is an alternative grading scale you may see elsewhere. Honey is not suitable for infants under 12 months.
Spirulina or chlorella?
Both are algae sold as powders or tablets. Spirulina is higher in protein and B vitamins; chlorella has a tougher cell wall and is usually sold "cracked" for that reason. Neither is a meaningful vitamin B12 source for vegans despite frequent claims โ spirulina contains pseudo-B12, which humans cannot use. If you avoid animal products, take a proper B12 supplement.
Are mushroom extracts worth it?
Lion's mane, reishi, chaga and cordyceps are all traditional-use ingredients with early and inconsistent human research. EU law permits no health claims for them, which is why our product pages describe species, extract details and directions rather than effects. Check whether a product uses fruiting-body extract or mycelium on grain โ they are not equivalent, and the label should say.
How should I store powders and nut butters?
Cool, dry and sealed. Oil-rich products โ nut butters, MCT oil, flaxseed โ oxidise with heat, light and air, which is what makes them taste bitter or "off". Buy a size you will finish. Refrigerate after opening where the label says so.
Do superfood powders replace vegetables?
No, and no product here claims to. Powders concentrate certain nutrients but lose the fibre volume, water content and variety that whole vegetables provide. They are an addition to a varied diet, not a substitute for one.
