Frequently asked questions
What makes a serum different from a moisturiser?
Concentration and delivery, not magic. Serums carry higher levels of active ingredients in a lighter base designed to absorb quickly, and they generally do not contain the occlusive fats that seal moisture in. That is why a serum usually goes under a moisturiser rather than instead of one.
Which serums should not be combined?
The genuinely awkward pairings: retinoids with exfoliating acids (AHA/BHA) in the same routine โ use them on alternate nights; strong vitamin C with niacinamide can cause temporary flushing for some people, though this is overstated online; and layering several actives at once makes it impossible to identify what caused a reaction. Introduce one at a time.
Vitamin C, niacinamide, retinol or bakuchiol โ where do I start?
Niacinamide is the most forgiving starting point and pairs with almost anything. Vitamin C is a morning antioxidant, unstable in light and air, so packaging matters. Retinol has the deepest evidence base for visible change but causes dryness and flaking early on and is avoided in pregnancy. Bakuchiol is the gentler plant-derived alternative with milder results and a smaller evidence base.
How much serum should I use?
Two to three drops for the whole face. More does not absorb better โ it sits on the surface, pills under moisturiser and wastes an expensive product. If a serum consistently feels tacky, you are using too much.
How long before a serum does anything?
Hydrating serums feel different immediately. Anything working on texture, tone or firmness needs a full skin-turnover cycle at minimum โ 8 to 12 weeks is the honest window, and consistency matters more than concentration.
