Frequently asked questions

Where should someone actually start with supplements?

With the gaps most likely to exist rather than the products with the best marketing. In Sweden that usually means vitamin D through the winter, and then โ€” depending on your diet โ€” omega-3 if you rarely eat oily fish, B12 if you avoid animal products, and iron only if a blood test shows you are low. A general multivitamin is reasonable insurance but not a substitute for identifying an actual shortfall.

Is it better to take a multivitamin or individual nutrients?

A multivitamin covers broad low-level insurance cheaply and simply. Individual nutrients let you dose meaningfully where you know you are short โ€” a multivitamin rarely contains enough vitamin D or magnesium to matter on its own. Many people sensibly do both, but that is when you need to add up totals to avoid stacking past recommended amounts.

Morning or evening?

Fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K) and omega-3 absorb better with a meal containing fat. B vitamins are often taken in the morning simply because some people find them activating. Magnesium is commonly taken in the evening. Iron absorbs best away from tea, coffee, calcium and dairy. Beyond that, the time you will actually remember beats the theoretically optimal time.

How do I know if a supplement is doing anything?

For most nutrients, honestly, you cannot tell by feel โ€” which is uncomfortable but true. Correcting a real deficiency in iron, vitamin D or B12 is often noticeable; topping up when you were already adequate is not. Blood testing before and after is the only reliable answer, and worth it for the nutrients where deficiency is plausible.

Do supplements expire?

Yes, and some more meaningfully than others. Probiotics lose viable bacteria over time and omega-3 oils oxidise โ€” both are genuinely less effective past date. Minerals and most vitamins degrade slowly and are more forgiving. Store cool, dry and sealed, and follow any refrigeration instruction on the label.
