Frequently asked questions
When is the best time to apply body lotion?
Within a few minutes of getting out of the shower, while skin is still slightly damp. Moisturiser works partly by slowing water loss, so applying it to damp skin traps water that is already there. Applying to fully dry skin hours later is less effective for the same amount of product.
Lotion, cream or body butter โ which do I need?
They differ mainly in oil-to-water ratio. Lotions are lightest and absorb fastest, suiting normal skin and warm weather. Creams sit in the middle. Body butters are richest and most occlusive, best for hands, elbows, heels and genuinely dry skin in winter. Richer is not automatically better โ heavy products on skin that does not need them just feel greasy.
Why is my skin drier in winter?
Cold air holds less moisture, and indoor heating drops humidity further โ a Swedish flat in January is a genuinely dehydrating environment. Add hot showers and the effect compounds. Many people sensibly switch to a richer lotion for the winter months and back to a lighter one in summer.
Is fragrance-free better?
Better for reactive skin, not inherently better. Fragrance is the most common cause of cosmetic contact allergy, and essential oils count โ Weleda's scented ranges use them. If your skin tolerates fragrance, there is no reason to avoid it. If it does not, look for products explicitly labelled fragrance-free rather than "unscented", which sometimes means a masking fragrance was used.
Can I use body lotion on my face?
Better not to make a habit of it. Facial skin is thinner and more prone to congestion, and body lotions are often more heavily fragranced and formulated with richer occlusives than facial skin wants. It will not harm you occasionally, but a facial moisturiser is the better routine choice.
What if my skin stays rough and dry whatever I use?
Persistent dryness, scaling, itching or cracking that does not respond to consistent moisturising is worth showing to a doctor or pharmacist rather than working through more products. Eczema, psoriasis and thyroid conditions all present this way, and they need proper assessment โ a body lotion is skincare, not treatment.
