Frequently asked questions

Shower cream, shower gel or cleansing bar — what is the difference?

Mostly texture and how much is left behind. Gels foam more and rinse cleaner, which suits normal to oily skin. Creams contain more emollient and leave a light conditioning film, better for dry skin. Solid cleansing bars are concentrated versions of the same chemistry without the plastic bottle — the Weleda Shower Bar Lavender is the one we stock.

Why does my skin feel tight after showering?

Usually water temperature and duration rather than the product. Hot water strips the skin's own lipids and a long shower does it faster. Lukewarm water, a shorter shower and body lotion applied while skin is still damp will do more for tightness than switching cleanser. If one specific product always causes it, the surfactant or fragrance is the likely culprit.

Is a cleansing bar the same thing as soap?

Not necessarily. Traditional soap is made by saponification and is strongly alkaline, which is what makes old-fashioned soap drying. Modern syndet bars use milder synthetic surfactants at a pH closer to skin. Read the ingredient list rather than the format — "bar" on its own tells you nothing about how gentle it is.

Can I use a body wash on my face or hair?

On hair, a 3-in-1 such as the Weleda For Men Active Fresh is designed for it, though it will not condition like a dedicated conditioner. On the face, generally not — facial skin is thinner and most body cleansers are formulated for a tougher surface. Use a facial cleanser if your skin is at all reactive.

Is fragrance a problem for sensitive skin?

Fragrance is the most common cause of cosmetic contact allergy, and that includes natural essential oils — natural does not mean hypoallergenic. Most of the Weleda shower range is scented with essential oils. If you react to scented products, look for fragrance-free options and read the full ingredient list rather than the front of the bottle.

Can I use these on babies and small children?

Only products stated as suitable. We stock the Dr Organic Calendula Baby Top To Toe Wash for that purpose. Adult body washes are generally too stripping and too heavily fragranced for infant skin — check the age guidance on each product page.
